Organic personal products are becoming big sellers, and customers are willing to pay a premium for them. Many companies are using this to their advantage and are marketing their products as “natural” and “organic” when they are not. So how do you know if personal products really are organic?

Let’s take a look…

Across the world, there are different organic certification classifications for cosmetics and personal products.

Some of the main certifiers in Australia include:

COSMOS

COSMOS began in Europe and is now a global certification body. They have two different certifications:

COSMOS Organic
The product contains a minimum of 95% organic ingredients. However water, salt and minerals are not counted toward this percentage.

COSMOS Natural
Items deemed “COSMOS Natural” comply with all the standards of COSMOS Organic, however, do not meet the minimum organic percentage.

Australian Certified Organic

This certifier also has two different certifications:

Certified organic
The product contains a minimum of 95% organic ingredients. However water, salt and minerals are not counted toward this percentage.

Made with certified organic ingredients
The product contains 70-95% organic ingredients.

NSF

NSF305_COI_Blue

The NSF is a US standard for personal organic products. Its certification differs in that the product must only contain 70% organic content.

It’s important to remember that if you are heading overseas, the certifiers will be different, so make sure you check the organic certification across the world and what their processes are.

The short story is that any product that claims to be natural or organic needs to have a certification label on it. If it doesn’t, their claims are probably not valid.
